Many of us have been saddened by the loss of iconic actor and comedian Robin Williams. He helped us laugh, think, and feel a myriad of emotions. He was an incandescent light who brightened the world with his very being.
We have become a nation numbed by grief because his death was totally unexpected. The passing of a celebrity reminds us death comes to each of us no matter how rich or famous we may be. It is a unique kind of grief. In some cases, it is a rehearsal to prepare us for the death of someone close to us.
The effect of the death of a celebrity feels like a part of our past has died, their body of work has had an impact on us at certain times of our lives. We often align ourselves with famous people who we deem to be similar to ourselves, who we look up to and aspire to be like so it feels like a little bit of the dream of who we could become, died with them.
The roles that Robin Williams portrayed both made us laugh and cry, as we reflected upon our imprint on life. On top of that, he was an individual who openly displayed his vulnerability and struggles as a person. His death reminds us we are all mortal and face difficult times and it is a terrifying reality that addiction and depression can touch anyone, anywhere.
It’s heartbreaking to think of the struggles he must have faced that influenced him to make the decision to complete suicide. He was a beloved figure of an entire nation yet with all the fame and fortune he had amassed mental illness took its toll on his life. Mental illnesses like depression can create a pain so deep for some that the only perceived solution is suicide. As we are in the midst of establishing the JDR Teen Suicide Program, developing awareness that mental illness can cause this kind of emotional pain is a critical piece in understanding the suicidal mind.
